Preparatory training for foreign citizens has been conducted at BMSTU since the resumption of admission for training of foreign citizens, i.e. since 1992. The purpose of the training is to bring the knowledge of a foreign citizen in the language, natural science and specialized fields in accordance with the level required for admission and further training at BMSTU.
The duration of study – 10 months (from 1st September to 30th June), including exams.
The number of disciplines and their content depend on the level of proficiency in the Russian language and the level of further study.
Foreign citizens who speak a language belonging to the Slavic language group and do not have initial knowledge of the Russian language, according to the test results, can be placed in A1 level groups.
The Preparatory Department implements special training programmes, which include disciplines of the profile departments, the Russian language and others in accordance with the pre-approved programme within the framework of interuniversity cooperation. These programmes are approved by BMSTU together with partner universities and may include various training options, such as exchange programmes, double degree programmes, etc.
Students of the Preparatory Department study in groups of no more than 12 people.
During the work of the Preparatory Department within the Faculty of International Educational Programmes for 10 years, the contingent has grown by more than 3 times, and the percentage of students entering various programmes of further study through entrance examinations, among those who successfully completed the preparatory training, has increased to 95 percent.

The Faculty has a separate Department of Russian as a Foreign Language, which supports the work of the Preparatory Department, with a number of experienced academics both in the Russian language and natural science disciplines.
